flat or pitched living roofGreen roofs can be created on both flat and pitched roofs.

The make up of the system depends upon the plants to be used. In any case a waterproof membrane needs to be installed. Typically a root membrane and a drainage layer will then be needed, with a barrier membrane to separate it from and protect the waterproof membrane.

The growing medium can then be added according the plant requirements. Careful roof edge detailing contains the planting system and prevents it from falling off the edge.

Please note that careful consideration needs to be made with regard to assessing the structural implications of the roof system, particularly in connection with retro fitting to an existing roof.

At Oxford Green Roofs we offer a structural assessment along with a design and installation service.

Sedum for a Green Roof

Intensive Roofs

An Intensive green roof is a complex structure, which requires a deep growing medium to enable the planting of trees and shrubs.  It requires calculated load bearings and an irrigation system, which can be costly and the maintenance for this kind of roof is high. However it can provide a green space where there is limited availability elsewhere, which has all the benefits of a garden.

Extensive Roofs

An Extensive green roof can provide a green, aesthetically pleasing and wildlife friendly space without the labour intensive maintenance. The growing medium is thin and the system is generally less costly as there is usually no irrigation system required.

A variety of planting can be used. With the right substrate and plants, maintenance can be kept to a minimum.

A mixture of native wild flowers and grasses, endemic to the local area, can be truly helpful to encouraging local wildlife and biodiversity. It gives a wonderful feel of looking out on a meadow with wildflowers appearing throughout the spring and summer.  During the winter it regenerates ready for the new growth the following spring

Sedum is a succulent and drought resistant plant which can be used over the whole of the roof or to add interest to a brown or eco roof (brown roofs are less about the plants and more about creating wildlife habitats). There are many varieties which, when in flower, can attract butterflies and bees.
